The Business of Dermatology is a one-day course that gives dermatologists a grounded, real-world understanding of what private practice involves, from starting out to running an established practice.

Faculty are practicing private practice physicians — not consultants — covering financial planning, operations, legal structures, and marketing through real cases from their own practices.

The format is peer-to-peer: small-group discussion and structured networking with colleagues who have solved the problems you are facing now.

Leave with a practical framework and genuine connections across the private practice community. Lunch and an evening reception keep the conversation going. Open to board-certified dermatologists and dermatology trainees.

    Learning objectives

Following this course, participants should be able to:

    • Describe the financial and business requirements of launching or growing a private dermatology practice, including capital and financing, real estate and contracts, and long-term planning, through case examples from dermatologists who have built and grown their own practices.

    • Strengthen day-to-day operations, including workflow design, revenue cycle and reimbursement, compliance, staffing, and technology systems, informed by peer discussion of what has worked in real dermatology practices.

    • Assess readiness for practice ownership by weighing the demands and responsibilities of running a practice against individual career goals, risk tolerance, financial position, and lifestyle priorities.

    Target audience

This course is for AAD members who are practicing dermatologists and dermatology residents. It is designed for final-year residents and fellows preparing to enter practice, early- to mid-career dermatologists interested in establishing a private practice, and dermatologists who have recently opened their own practice.
