Firefighter Skin Cancer Check program providing care to community heroes

The AAD’s Firefighter Skin Cancer Checks Program is continuing its nationwide expansion. The initiative was launched last year in partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network and is designed to support a population that is at a significantly higher risk of melanoma and skin cancer than the general public. The program has gained strong traction and member involvement in its first full year.

So far in 2025, 1,422 firefighters have received free skin cancer checks at events across the country. This brings the total to date to 5,332 checks performed by AAD member dermatologists. That’s more than halfway toward the Academy’s goal of performing skin cancer checks for 10,000 firefighters by the end of 2026!

This progress reflects the power of partnership, volunteerism, and the critical role dermatologists play in early detection. You can help continue the momentum by hosting your own firefighter skin cancer check event.
