2025 Skin Cancer Awareness Month a massive success

May was Skin Cancer Awareness Month, and the Academy once again made an effort to educate the public about the risks and dangers of skin cancer.

The AAD’s YouTube channel also released a new video: How to apply sunscreen: Dermatologist tips. It received over 3,900 views and dozens of reshares in the first month.
Traditional media wins remained a focus of the Academy’s efforts. The Academy’s media relations team successfully secured nearly 600 placements in print, TV, and online media, focusing on survey data highlighting the public’s knowledge and attitudes toward sun protection and the Academy’s key messages on skin cancer prevention and detection. In total, these placements have a potential audience of more than 6 billion.
Notable coverage included a Live Now Fox segment on how to prevent skin cancer featuring AAD President Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD; Women’s Health and Fortune articles focused on survey findings pertaining to Gen Z sun protection habits; and a Today.com piece that highlights the critical role of early detection by recounting the experience of a young woman whose mother noticed an unusual mole on her back, prompting her to visit a board-certified dermatologist who diagnosed it as melanoma.
Finally, the AAD’s public-facing website remained a top source of information for the public with over 150,000 views to the AAD’s Skin Cancer Resource Center from over 100,000 unique visitors.
