Kids with humor make Camp Discovery fun

Medical student and first time volunteer Creighton Pfau had a great Camp Discovery experience.

My time at Camp Discovery was a great experience. I learned a lot and got to have fun with the campers. The kids had a good attitude, were fun to be around, and were really funny and outgoing. You could tell they had a good time, which made my whole experience fun and easy. The kids made the experience what it was.

I heard about Camp Discovery through an Instagram post by a dermatology interest group who posted a link to Camp Discovery. I went through the application process online — this was my first time volunteering, and I had an awesome time and am hoping to go back.

I had never attended a summer camp growing up, and so I felt like a kid myself at Camp Discovery. It had nice amenities, all the cabins were really nice, and it was altogether a nice place. But I liked interacting with the kids the best. They were awesome kids. They were real characters and always doing something funny. They made me laugh at least once every five minutes.

Camp Discovery is a good experience for anyone having the time to do it, especially if you’re a medical student interested in dermatology. You see how these conditions affect people in real life, instead of just reading about them in a textbook. You get to see these skin conditions in real life and get a better understanding of how you can help people who have them.

Camp Discovery is beneficial for the campers because it’s a safe place that allows them to come out of their shells a little bit more. If you have a dermatological disease, it’s usually something on the outside and is visible. This can make anyone feel self-conscious.

Camp Discovery is beneficial for volunteers like me because you get a feeling that you’re really helping out. I found this especially fun! When you volunteer and are there for a full week, then you build relationships with the campers. I found this to be a special thing. Thank you to everyone who organized and put on this amazing summer camp.
