American Academy of Dermatology Statement on the Importance of Sun Protection

Statement from Susan C. Taylor, MD, FAAD, President, American Academy of Dermatology

ROSEMONT, Ill. (May 20, 2025) — Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S., affecting an estimated one in five Americans in their lifetime. Every day, nearly 20 Americans die from melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

Unprotected exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays is a leading cause of skin cancer. Fortunately, it’s also one of the most preventable risk factors. In addition to using a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to minimize both short- and long-term damage from the sun and reduce the risk of skin cancer, the AAD also recommends that people seek shade when appropriate and wear sun-protective clothing, including a lightweight and long-sleeved shirt, pants, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

While questions have been raised about certain sunscreen ingredients, it’s important to remember that sunscreen remains a vital part of skin cancer prevention. The best sunscreen is the one you’ll actually use and reapply. If you have questions about sun protection and sunscreen ingredients, talk to a board-certified dermatologist, who can help develop an effective sun protection plan for you and your family.
