Firefighter Skin Cancer Checks Program on a ladder to success
On June 1, the Academy launched its new Firefighter Skin Cancer Checks Program nationally. Developed in partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, the new program aims to provide help to a population that is at a much greater risk of melanoma and skin cancer than the average person.
The Academy piloted the program at an event at the AAD Annual Meeting in San Diego in March, during which 20 AAD members performed nearly 100 skin cancer checks for local firefighters.
The Academy also hosted a skin cancer check event at the New York Fire Department’s training academy in New York City, where nearly 300 skin cancer checks were performed. This event was covered by the New York Post, WABC, Spectrum 1 NY, and CBS New York, resulting in over 25 million impressions.
The Academy’s goal is to provide skin cancer checks to 10,000 firefighters by 2026. You can help by hosting your own skin cancer check event.
