Learning module: Evaluation of pigmented lesions

Goals and objectives

The purpose of this module is to help medical students develop a clinical approach to the evaluation and initial management of patients with pigmented lesions.

After completing this module, the learner should be able to:

• Identify morphologic features of different types of nevi

• Apply concepts of “signature nevus” and “ugly duckling” sign to the evaluation of pigmented lesions

• Provide patient education about sun protection and skin self-examinations

• Recognize when to refer patients with pigmented lesions to a dermatologist
