Beef tallow

Emerging diseases Viral Trends banner image

Overview

Beef tallow is rendered animal fat rich in saturated fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins promoted online as a “natural” moisturizer. (1)

On TikTok, proponents claim that beef tallow mimics the lipid profile of human skin and promote its use for eczema, acne, anti-aging, and skin healing, despite limited clinical evidence supporting safety and efficacy. Products are frequently homemade or sold through small online vendors and influencer marketplaces.

Potential dermatologic complications

Acne

Beef tallow’s heavy occlusive nature may worsen acne or folliculitis, particularly in acne-prone individuals. (2)

Allergic and irritant dermatitis

Trace amounts of beef protein can trigger allergic reactions in patients with beef protein sensitivity. (3) Added botanicals, essential oils, fragrances, and preservatives may contribute to dermatitis. (4)

Contamination and spoilage concerns

Homemade or improperly stored products may pose contamination risks.

Important history questions

  • Are you using beef tallow or animal fat–based moisturizers?

  • Do you have hesitations about traditional moisturizers or “chemical” skincare products?

  • Is the beef tallow homemade or purchased online?

  • Does the beef tallow contain essential oils or fragrances?

  • Did acne or dermatitis worsen after starting use?

Counseling considerations

Dermatologists can counsel patients regarding:

  • Potential for acne worsening in acne-prone skin.

  • Risks associated with fragranced or homemade products.

  • Importance of gentle moisturizers for barrier repair.

  • Proper storage and contamination considerations.

  • Need to discontinue products if dermatitis or folliculitis develops.
