  • What type of license agreement do we need in order to obtain a copy of the full Burden of Skin Disease report?
There are two types of agreements required, depending on your use of the Burden of Skin Disease Report (hereafter the “Report” or the “Content”). If you would like to use or review the entire Report solely within your organization or company, then you will need to enter into an internal use agreement. If you would like to use excerpts from the Report in a publication or in conjunction with a product, then you must enter into a distribution license agreement. For more information on licensing opportunities and how to apply, please review the information below.

Can I get a copy of the full Burden of Skin Disease report?
In order to obtain access to the Report for any reason, you must enter into a licensing agreement with the AAD. See details below on the appropriate agreement and use.

I would like to review the Report within my institution or business. What type of agreement do I need and how do I apply?
For internal use of the Report solely within your company or institution, you would need to enter into an internal use license agreement. To initiate the license process, you must complete and submit our online licensing application. Please complete the application as thoroughly as possible to facilitate the application review process.

What is the cost associated with an internal use license agreement?
Licensing fees may apply and will be determined after review of your application and your intended use.

Do I need a license to include the report data in an internal system? Is there a different agreement for this?
You will need to enter into an "internal use" license agreement. An internal use license gives a predetermined number of Users permission to review and use the Content solely within a company or organization. Please review the User definition to ensure you are entering into the proper level of agreement.

How do I access the license application?
Licensing application can be completed online above.

How does the Academy define a "User"?
An internal-use User is defined as any employee of a company or organization who has direct access to a product that includes Academy Content and requires meaningful access to the product to perform a job or task. In an external distribution license, a User is defined as any third party who purchases or is given access to a product or publication of a company or organization that contains an excerpt of the Content.

If after review of the report, I would like to repurpose some or all of the Academy's Report in a research paper or publication, do I need special permission?
Yes. The Academy holds the copyright to the Report and any use, printing, or repurposing of any kind in a product or publication (internally or for distribution) will require a license. Please review the information below to determine the appropriate agreement required, or just complete the application above and an Academy licensing representative will help you define the appropriate agreement.

I am developing a product and have determined that I would like to include some or all of the Report in my product. Do I need special permission from the Academy to distribute the content?
Yes. The Academy holds the copyright to the Report, and use or reprinting of the report in any product or publication, for sale or other distribution, requires an external distribution license. Distribution of the full Report or portions of the report alone is NOT permitted without the explicit written consent of the Academy.

How can I get a distribution license from the Academy?
To initiate the license process, you must complete and submit our online application above. Please complete the application as thoroughly as possible, as this will expedite the application review process.

How do I access the licensing application?
The licensing application can be completed online on the form above.

How long does it take to get a distribution license?
Please allow a minimum of four to six weeks for the review of your licensing application. Should your application be approved, additional time may be required to complete the review and signature process. Note: No use rights are granted until the application is completed and a license agreement is signed by both parties.

What is the fee to obtain access to the report and a distribution license?
Licensing fees may apply and will be determined after review of your application and your intended use or distribution methods.

What are the other license terms?
Distribution of the full Report or portions of the report alone is NOT permitted without the explicit written consent of the Academy. If an excerpt of the Report is used for external distribution in conjunction with your product, your final product must contain significant value-added information, in addition to the excerpt of the Academy Content. Editing or revising the Academy Content is NOT permitted without written consent of the Academy. License terms are generally one year and can be considered for renewal (please allow a minimum of four to six weeks for this process). Distribution may include electronic media (internet) or print. For electronic distribution, you must demonstrate that adequate security measures are in place. All proposed products will be reviewed and approved by the Academy, prior to granting final permissions.

Will my agreement include international distribution rights?
Our agreements are for US distribution. International rights are available. Please specify this intended use on the application.

My product will only use a very small portion of the Burden of Skin Disease report. Do I still need a license?
Yes. To access the full Report, you must enter into an internal use agreement. If after reviewing the full Report, you later intend to include a very limited amount of the Report in an external publication, this could potentially be considered “Fair Use” under US copyright law and may not require an additional distribution license. Are there other resources available to reference that summarize or excerpt the Burden of Skin Disease report? Do I have to get the full Report to see the findings?
The Academy has published a series of articles in JAAD and created additional resources which provide a great overview of significant findings. The Academy is also producing a series of individual skin disease briefs that can be downloaded and used for personal/noncommercial use.

What if the data I want to use is from either the JAAD publications or from the downloadable content from your website?
Any questions related to permissions for JAAD publications should be directed to Elsevier.

If you are interested in using repurposing our other Burden of Skin Disease related Content, you will also need to enter a distribution license from the Academy.
