Relentless AADA advocacy lays foundation for improved sunscreen access
As a result of the Academy’s ongoing advocacy to ensure that consumers have options to protect themselves from UV exposure, the FDA proposed the approval of a new sunscreen ingredient, bemotrizinol (BEMT). If approved, this new ingredient will expand the sunscreen options available to the public. The AADA has urged the FDA for over two decades to review and approve more innovative sunscreen ingredients and is encouraged that the agency is taking a step forward.
This year, the AADA also successfully advocated for the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act. The legislation requires the FDA to establish clearer, more flexible standards for testing new sunscreen ingredients, and to align its testing standards with international testing standards. The legislation also prompts the FDA to approve new sunscreen ingredients, and evaluate ingredients already approved for use internationally.
