AADA endorses federal sunscreen reform legislation
The AADA joined members of the SUNucate Coalition to endorse a bipartisan bill that would streamline the FDA review process regarding the effectiveness and safety of new ingredients for nonprescription sunscreens.
On July 16, the House Energy & Commerce Health Subcommittee held a hearing on “Legislative Proposals to Maintain and Improve the Public Health Workforce, Rural Health, and Over-the-Counter Medicines.” The hearing included remarks about H.R. 3686, the SAFE Sunscreen Standards Act. In his comments, Rep. John Joyce, MD, FAAD (R-PA) applauded the AADA for its support.
In 2014, Congress passed the Sunscreen Innovation Act to establish a process for review and approval of active sunscreen ingredients. Despite these efforts, it has been more than 20 years since the FDA approved new sunscreen ingredients.
