Attendance at the American Academy of Dermatology’s Annual Meeting remains strong

SCHAUMBURG, ILL. (April 4, 2011) ― — The American Academy of Dermatology’s (Academy) 69th Annual Meeting, recently held in New Orleans from Feb. 4-8, had an attendance of more than 16,500 people from more than 90 countries ― continuing the Academy’s trend of strong attendance numbers at Academy scientific meetings. With a common goal of enhancing patient care through continuing medical education, more than 1400 speakers contributed to nearly 400 scientific sessions on the latest research and clinical information in the diagnosis and medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of skin, hair and nail conditions.

“The Academy has continued to host the largest dermatology meeting in the world, offering the latest in dermatologic education to physicians from all parts of the globe,” said dermatologist Lawrence F. Eichenfield, MD, FAAD, chair of the Academy’s Scientific Assembly Committee. “The meeting provides dermatologists with the latest research, which results in better care for our patients, and that is an outcome to celebrate.”

There were 680 scientific posters presented at the meeting. Exhibit space totaled 172,950 square feet with exhibitors representing more than 414 companies. The Academy’s 67th Annual Meeting, held in March 2009, ranked number 120 in the 2010 Tradeshow Week 200 Annual Directory with 176,200 square footage of exhibit space.

In conjunction with the Annual Meeting, the Academy held a Dermatology in Action service initiative in an effort to give back to the New Orleans area. Academy members volunteered at the Lower Ninth Ward Village by improving garden space that will provide residents with farm-fresh produce. To encourage education in area children, volunteers painted college-themed murals and donated math and English books to be used for tutoring. In addition, dermatologists collected donations of medical supplies for the Tulane Community Health Center and raised money for future volunteerism efforts.

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Academy will be held in San Diego from March 16-20, 2012.
