International Fellow Membership

The International Fellow membership is for dermatologists who were trained outside the United States and Canada and have obtained board certification by a foreign dermatology board with educational and professional requirements that are approximately equivalent to the requirements for certification by the American Board of Dermatology.

Eligibility

International Fellow membership is available to dermatologists who:

• Were trained outside the U.S. and Canada with educational and professional requirements approximately equivalent to those qualified to take the examination by the American Board of Dermatology; and

• Have obtained board certification equivalent to the American Board of Dermatology or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Application timeline

• Apply March 27 - June 1 for membership effective July 1, 2026.

• Apply July 1 - Oct. 31 for membership effective Jan. 1, 2027.

Documentation

The following must be submitted before an application can be processed. All documents must be in their original format and include an English translation. Translations do not need to be professional and can be provided in a Word or other text document.

• National dermatologic society membership in the country where you reside: A current letter indicating you are a member in good standing which should include the type of membership held. The letter must be current within the last 30 days from when the application is submitted..

• Copy of your current medical license.

• Copy of your dermatology diploma.

• Copy of your medical diploma.

• Other credentials if applicable: Copy of all diplomas for credentials listed.

• Copy of your board certification: Certification should be approximately equivalent to certification by the American Board of Dermatology. Depending on the country, this could include examination, society membership, specific training program, etc. Board equivalency must be demonstrated for you to qualify for International Fellow membership.

• Curriculum vitae in English: CV should include institutions attended, cumulative dates of attendance, and degrees obtained for undergraduate, graduate, residency training, and other specialty training, as well as any board certification. Also include information about institutional and academic affiliations, memberships in medical societies, and professional organizations.

Membership dues and application fees

All applicants must pay a one-time, nonrefundable application fee of $100 along with current dues.

International Fellows

• Reside outside the U.S. or Canada: $495

• Reside in the U.S. or Canada with a U.S. or Canadian medical license: $995

• Reside in the U.S. or Canada without a U.S. or Canadian medical license: $495

New Graduates

• New graduates who are just completing residency: $165

This rate is also available for those who complete fellowship training directly after residency and apply the same year the fellowship ends..

Electronic membership

• Dermatologists who reside in low to upper middle-income economies: $200

Electronic membership is available to members in low- to upper middle-income economies. It provides full benefits delivered electronically, including member rates for meetings and products, plus access to the website, journals, and DermWorld.

Additional information

Dues and fees are subject to change and are listed in U.S. dollars. They are not deductible as charitable contributions but may be deductible as a business expense, excluding 18% attributed to lobbying activities.

Benefits begin only after a complete application, and all required documents are submitted; please allow 7–10 business days for review.

If you wish to register for any AAD meeting, note that meeting registration deadlines do not coincide with membership application dates.
