Desi’s personal story

My dad died from melanoma at age 53. He had a black spot on his back that my mom noticed. He died almost exactly three years after he was diagnosed. His mom (my grandmother) had melanoma on her lower leg about 40 years ago. She is still living. My dad's sister (my aunt) had melanoma on her leg about 10 years ago and she is still living.

My sister and I get a skin check every six months. She has already had basal cell carcinoma on her neck (she is 36), and I have had several pre-cancerous spots removed off my face (I am 44).

I encourage everyone to get a yearly skin check, use sunscreen, and stay out of tanning beds.
