Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Summarize current information about medical professional liability claims related to errors in diagnosis of melanoma.
- Recognize challenging clinical scenarios in diagnosing melanoma and options for providing optimal patient care.
- Implement strategies in clinical practice to enhance the care of patients at risk for melanoma.
The diagnosis of melanoma can often be challenging and dermatologists are faced with the difficult task of accurately identifying melanoma while also minimizing the number of biopsies needed for patients. There are ethical and legal considerations involved in the misdiagnosis of melanoma. This focus session will review current information on medical professional liability claims as it relates to errors in diagnosis of melanoma, and review cases of challenging or missed melanomas. Take-home pearls to optimize patient care will be discussed. This focus session is directed to all general dermatologists.
