Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Recognize the pros and cons of the different methods for diagnosing onychomycosis
  • Evaluate the agents and devices available to treat onychomycosis
  • Identify the strategies used to prevent reinfection of onychomycosis

Description:
The epidemiology of onychomycosis will be reviewed with discussion of the prevalence of mixed infections and non-dermatophyte molds. The prevalence of onychomycosis in special populations will be discussed. New developments in the diagnosis of onychomycosis will be summarized with evaluation of the pros and cons of each method. Oral, topical and device-based therapies for onychomycosis will be presented. Different treatment regimens of the established oral agents will be discussed. Considerations in the treatment of onychomycosis in special populations will be summarized, for example, children. Strategies to prevent relapse will be presented.
