F043 - Is it Only Skin Deep? A "Checklist" Approach to Diagnosing and Managing Birthmarks and Neonatal Skin Diseases

Friday, February 16; 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM

Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Evaluate common vascular birthmarks using a check-list approach
  • Evaluate key neonatal skin diseases using a check-list approach
  • Identify whether ancillary testing is needed for pigmented birthmarks including nevi and disorders of hypo and hyperpigmentation

Description

Birthmarks and skin disorders in newborns and young infants are common. Many are benign and reassurance is the best approach but some can be associated with significant extra-cutaneous disease. This session will present many of the most common and significant birthmarks and neonatal skin disorders emphasizing the following: 1. Making a specific diagnosis 2. Evaluation for potential extra-cutaneous conditions that could potentially be associated with that diagnosis 3. Creation of a "checklist" to insure appropriate disease-specific evaluation and care.
