Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Describe diverse and varied approaches to engagement in global health work as a dermatologist
  • Recognize the barriers and potential solutions to creating a global health career in dermatology
  • Utilize the framework and examples discussed in this session to help develop one’s own career and evaluate potential career options


This is an opportunity to gain knowledge about developing a career in global health and dermatology. Global health interests include work done with communities abroad, as well as with immigrants, refugees, and Native Americans. Drawing on examples of various dermatologists, career pathways encompassing clinical, research, educational, programmatic, policy, and public health work will be described. Barriers and potential solutions to obtaining a job that allows for the growth of this career interest will be discussed. The intended audience includes medical students, dermatology residents, and early career dermatologists, as well as faculty and organizations engaged in career development.
