S023 - Hair and Scalp Dermoscopy

Saturday, February 17; 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Learning Objectives

Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Use dermoscopy in the routine evaluation of patients with hair disorders
  • Recognize dermoscopy patterns that characterize non scarring and scarring alopecias
  • Utilized dermoscopy to select optimal biopsy site and to follow up disease activity

Description

Dermoscopy is a non-invasive technique that has been increasingly utilized for the diagnosis and management of hair and scalp disorders. It greatly improves clinical management and allows examining large scalp areas in a relatively short time. Dermoscopic images are useful to explain patients their disease, which is very important to achieve compliance with treatments. Besides diagnosing alopecia, trichoscopy is extremely valuable in choosing the ideal biopsy site and for evaluating treatment response. This session reviews the dermoscopic patterns observed in normal scalp, non-scarring and scarring alopecia and inflammatory and infectious scalp disorders.
