Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Identify important features on patient’s history and physical examination that support a diagnosis of scarring alopecia
  • Recognize both the importance and limitations of the scalp biopsy in diagnosing scarring alopecia
  • Select appropriate treatments for scarring alopecia

Description:
Prompt diagnosis of scarring alopecias is important to halt further hair loss. Although loss of the follicular openings is the clinical hallmark of scarring alopecia, it is sometimes possible to diagnose scarring alopecias at earlier stages if a systematic approach is used. This session is designed to assist participants recognize key clinical and pathological features of the primary scarring alopecias. The participant will be able to identify clinical situations that warrant a scalp biopsy, what to expect and not expect from the biopsy result, and how to initiate treatment.
