Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Describe a brief history of superficial radiation therapy underscoring its significance and efficacy in dermatology over the past century.
- Discuss the basics of radiation physics, radiobiology, dosimetry, treatment planning and delivery.
- Discuss the basics of setting up and integrating radiotherapy into a Dermatologic practice.
Superficial radiation therapy has played a major role in the treatment of skin cancer by dermatologists who pioneered its usage. In recent years the use of radiotherapy for
non-melanoma skin cancer has declined due to advances in our specialty in the direction of surgical treatment and the great success of Mohs surgery. This session highlights the resurgence of superficial radiation therapy by dermatologists for select skin cancers in patients who desire to avoid surgery or who are poor surgical candidates due to medical comorbidities or contraindications such as cardiac disease, frailty, advanced age, and anticoagulation. We will review the history, physics, dosimetry, efficacy, judicious selection of lesions, and safe practical application of this time honored modality.
