Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Analyze different objective and subjective aspects of beauty.
  • Recognize characteristics of body dysmorphic disorder.
  • Diagnose, evaluate, and appropriately treat those with body dysmorphic disorder.

This course offers an overview of the objective and subjective aspects of beauty to segue into a discussion of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). The course will begin with an analysis of what the human eye finds aesthetically pleasing including symmetry, averageness, proportions, sexual dimorphism, skin texture, and body fat distribution. Also to be discussed are how these biologic perceptions can be reshaped through individual, cultural, and historical influences. The course will then focus on disorders of self perception, BDD, including a discussion of the history, epidemiology, symptoms, diagnosis, screening tools, implications for dermatologists, treatment algorithms, and end with case studies.
