Open admission to eligible categories, no tuition or ticket

Date: Sunday, March 23

CME Credits: 2.00

Location: Room 712

Time: 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Director: Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD, FAAD

Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:

  • Define the pathophysiology of disease.
  • Discuss how new drugs are being developed.
  • Recognize the potential of molecular medicine.

Major scientific advances continually inform our approach to patient care. In order to advance our approach to patients it is incumbent on us to have a better knowledge of the pathophysiology of disease. In this lecture I will describe several examples of basic science of discoveries that are helping us to better understand the mechanisms involved in and treatment of human disease. I will discuss the importance of identifying disease genes and their contribution to disease susceptibility in disease that we are beginning to recognize as complex genetic diseases, such as lupus erythematosus and psoriasis. I will also discuss the advent of new treatments that are based on the molecular mechanisms of benign and malignant diseases.
