Double your dollars! #GivingTuesday donations for Camp Discovery will be matched up to $15,000!

#GivingTuesday is a global day celebrating giving and philanthropy. Much like Black Friday and Cyber Monday are widely recognized days that kick off the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday is commemorated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving when many are focused on year-end charitable giving. The Academy is asking you to join the #GivingTuesday movement on November 29 by making Camp Discovery your charity of choice. Can’t wait until #GivingTuesday? Make your gift now! It will still be included in our matching gift offer. DONATE NOW!

We donate to Camp Discovery —  and we hope you will too on #GivingTuesday. This year your gift will be matched, dollar for dollar, up to $15,000.

For my wife, Peg, and I, supporting Camp Discovery is a no-brainer.

Peg’s parents were both teachers and owned and operated several summer camps. Peg was a camper from ages 1- 15. I was a camper at two different summer camps and subsequently a camp counselor and camp doctor many years later. Our three children were also fortunate to have the opportunity to attend summer camp.

gt16-left-sidebar-infographic.jpgSince “happy campers” is a fitting description for our family, we have felt compelled to give back to the Academy, specifically Camp Discovery, for the past five years. Dermatology has prepared me for great career opportunities and giving back by supporting Camp Discovery is an obvious choice because our connection to summer camp runs deep.

For all of these reasons, I am pleased to announce my commitment to matching your charitable gifts up to $10,000! In addition, my colleague, Dr. Franziska Ringpfeil, will also continue to offer her matching gift of $5,000, for a total potential #GivingTuesday match of up to $15,000!

A turning point in our assistance for Camp Discovery recently happened when Peg and I attended the Academy’s President's Gala earlier this year. Camp was highlighted as the main philanthropic cause of the evening. A video showing happy and joyful campers — despite their challenging skin diseases — was presented. Although Peg and I have yet to volunteer at Camp Discovery, it felt very gratifying to be part of this transformative program.

Interestingly, that evening we shared the same dinner table with Dr. Franziska Ringpfeil, a colleague whom I have known since residency. She passionately described her nearly 20-year support for Camp Discovery, including her initiative to launch a matching gift campaign on #GivingTuesday last year. Between hearing Dr. Ringpfeil speak from her heart and seeing the assistance Camp Discovery provides on many levels, we knew more should and could be done. More children should have the same opportunity to enjoy summer camp.

With your support, children with serious skin conditions will continue to experience summer camp under the expert care of dermatologists and nurses. At Camp Discovery, they will find a safe place where they won’t feel alone or defined by their disease — and experience an uplifting social and emotional opportunity.

The Academy is proud to offer this opportunity to more than 300 children every year. Thanks to the generosity of Academy members and others, there is no cost to the campers or their families. To make this opportunity possible for another group of kids, we need your support on #GivingTuesday.

Please join us in our efforts and make Camp Discovery your charity of choice on #GivingTuesday. Remember, when you make your gift, it will be matched up to $15,000!
