Q&A addresses Medicare e-prescribing requirements and associated penalties

Q. What are Medicare e-prescribing requirements and associated penalties?

By Rachna Chaudhari

A: Under CMS’s e-prescribing program, established in 2008, Medicare Part B providers must e-prescribe to obtain incentive payments and avoid penalties. In  2013 providers must e-prescribe at least 10 times for Medicare Part B patients before June 30, 2013 and report the code G8553 on their claim form to show that they successfully done so. If providers report 10 times before June 30, 2013, they will avoid a 2 percent penalty in 2014 and a 1 percent penalty in 2015.They can also report an additional 15 times before Dec. 31, 2013 to obtain a 0.5 percent incentive. The program ends after 2015.
