The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is seeking candidates for the position of Editor of the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (JAAD). Consistently ranked by AAD members as their most important benefit of membership, JAAD is one of the most widely read, cited, and respected journals in the field.

Position overview

The Editor is appointed for an initial five-year term beginning June 1, 2018, which may be renewed for a second five-year term with the consent of both the Editor and the AAD Board of Directors. A transition period will begin by approximately January 2018.

The Editor is responsible for:

  • The editorial content for the journal
  • Directing and implementing journal policy within the mission and financial parameters established by the AAD Board of Directors
  • Obtaining and organizing peer reviews
  • Corresponding with authors
  • Developing innovative ways to use technology to present, disseminate, and foster discussion about clinical research

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Establish a group of associate and assistant editors and an editorial board with a broad spectrum of expertise in clinical, translational, and basic science
  • Evaluate peer reviews of journal articles
  • Work closely with associate editors to select appropriate articles for publication
  • Work closely with editorial office staff to meet publication deadlines
  • Adjudicate editorial disputes
  • Represent the Academy and journal at appropriate national and international meetings/venues
  • Improve the efficiency of the journal submission and review process
  • Develop and implement strategies to support strong impact factor

Submission requirements and evaluation criteria

Applicants must complete the online form below and upload the required documents no later than June 12:

  1. Curriculum vitae
  2. A one or two- page letter discussing your level of interest, the qualities you would bring to the position, and you vision for the journal.
  3. An updated COI

The Ad Hoc Task Force to select the JAAD Editor will consider all candidates and make specific recommendations to the AAD Board of Directors at its Nov. 4, 2017 meeting. Qualities that are considered important include:

  • A broad-based background in dermatology
  • Evidence of organizational and leadership experience
  • A commitment to maintaining the high quality of this journal
  • Demonstrated writing skills in English
  • A reputation for fairness
  • Previous experience in an editorial role with JAAD or other dermatology scientific journals
  • Proficiency in multimedia/innovative technology
  • Enthusiastic support from institution and colleagues
  • Must be an active Fellow* of the AAD
