About JAAD

To accomplish this mission, JAAD is dedicated to the clinical and continuing education needs of the dermatologic community. With a circulation of more than 20,000, the journal is perceived by dermatologists across the globe as the foremost scholarly journal in the field and is repeatedly cited as a primary benefit of AAD membership.

Since its founding, almost 40 years ago, JAAD has cultivated a devoted following with practicing dermatologists making it the single, best-read periodical in all of dermatology, according to regular readership studies conducted by Kantar Media, the leading medical journal readership measurement company.

The first issue of JAAD was published in July 1979 under the editorship of J. Graham Smith, Jr., MD, who served in this role for ten years from its founding. Dr. Smith has been succeeded by Richard L. Dobson, MD (1988-1998), Jeffrey D. Bernhard, MD (1998-2008), and Bruce H. Thiers, MD (2008-2018).

JAAD receives more than 1,800 manuscripts annually and publishes an array of original, peer-reviewed articles on clinical and investigative studies, treatments, new diagnostic techniques, and other topics relating to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders of the skin, hair, and nails. To assist physicians with maintenance of certification requirements, the journal also features CME articles based on “hot topics” in the specialty; these allow AAD members to earn valuable CME credits.

In addition to strong readership, JAAD is among the top most cited journals in the field with an impact factor of 7.002.
