Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Diagnose skin conditions caused by fungi of the Malassezia (Pityrosporum) genus.
- Discuss pathogenic strategies employed by Malassezia yeasts and host responses to them.
- Choose appropriate treatments for Malassezia-related skin conditions, including tinea versicolor and Pityrosporum folliculitis
Description:
Malassezia (Pityrosporum) are commensal yeasts found on the sebaceous areas of human skin. They are known to play a pathogenic role in tinea versicolor, Pityrosporum folliculitis, and seborrheic dermatitis, and have also been implicated in subsets of psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. In this session, we will discuss recent developments including the identification of new Malassezia species and compounds produced by Malassezia that impact immunity and pigmentation. We will review exciting new studies showing how the human immune system uses Toll like receptors and antimicrobial peptides to combat Malassezia. Most importantly, we will discuss the diagnosis and treatment of Malassezia-related diseases, including challenging cases.
