Description:
The diagnosis and management of lentigo maligna melanoma in the head and neck region presents multiple challenges due to variable natural history and clinical presentation, location in a cosmetically and functionally sensitive area, and unpredictable subclinical extension beyond recommended excision margins. The goal of this session is to illustrate the multiple challenges and present a comprehensive management approach including: 1) clinical assessment tools; 2) excision techniques and corresponding tissue grossing methods; 3) histologic evaluation of surgical margins and associated pitfalls; and 4) role of nonsurgical alternatives.
