Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Recognize the clinical and histologic presentations of acute GVHD
- Recognize the pathophysiology and clinical spectrum of chronic GVHD
- Identify effective treatment strategies for acute and chronic GVHD
Description:
This session will focus on graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), the major cause of non-relapse mortality for patients undergoing hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). An overview of the methods of and indications for HSCT will be presented, as will the clinical presentation and treatment of acute GVHD. The role of skin biopsies early after transplant, and the histologic features of GVHD and its mimickers will be discussed. In addition, the wide spectrum of clinical features of chronic GVHD, the classification of these presentations, the pathophysiology that leads to chronic GVHD and evidence-based treatments will be reviewed.
