Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Discuss the latest research on ethnic skin and hair biology
- Recognize and treat the most common skin and hair conditions encountered among skin of color patients
- Recognize skin cancer disparities in communities of color
Description:
The skin of color population is rapidly increasing in the United States. The basic science and varied response mechanisms of skin of color are being actively investigated. In addition to the unique dermatologic conditions encountered in skin of color, the presentation and response to management of common disorders may differ in individuals with darker skin. This symposium will review the latest information on the basic science of ethnic skin and hair, discuss the management of common disorders and challenges encountered in skin of color patients, and review some of the current health care disparities as relates to skin of color and skin cancer.
