Learning Objectives:
Following this course, the attendee should be able to:
- Diagnose hair, scalp, and nail diseases more effectively with emphasis on new data for common disorders and dermatopathologic-clinical correlation.
- Categorize different forms of alopecia by pathologic criteria
- Develop a therapeutic ladder of treatment of scalp and hair disorders
Description:
This session will review updates for the most common forms of hair loss. Etiology, mechanism, and treatment will be discussed for female pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, hair disorders in men, and hair and scalp disorders in patients of color. Updates in scarring hair loss will be discussed including: central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia and traction alopecia. Topical, oral, and laser treatment modalities will be compared. New medication and device treatment trials will be discussed including updates for existing oral medications. Dermatopathology updates in alopecia will be discussed with tips on the histologic approach to differential diagnosis of alopecia.
