Scholarship Opportunities for U.S./Canadian Dermatologists

Residents' International Grant

Application period is open; incoming second and third-year residents are encouraged to apply for 2009/senior year.


In keeping with its dedication to international educational opportunities, the American Academy of Dermatology is providing funding in 2009 for six U.S. or

Canadian senior dermatology residents to participate in a four week elective in a developing nation where the Education and Volunteers Abroad Committee (EVAC) is establishing dermatology support programs and teledermatology consulting services.

The primary site is Gaborone, Botswana, where participants rotate between the Princess Marina Hospital and the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative (BIPAI). Residents take part in dermatologic HIV care for both children and adults, and can visit an outreach site in Francistown. Residents will also have the option of completing their rotations at other BIPAI sites in Maseru, Lesotho; Mbabane, Swaziland; or Lilongwe, Malawi. The grant allows residents an opportunity to learn about the care of tropical and HIV-related dermatologic conditions, as well as how to practice routine dermatology with finite resources. Residents are expected to prepare lectures and presentations, develop a database of photos, submit teledermatolgy consults, as well as present a report of activities to the Academy and their home programs.

Applicants must provide a letter of support from their Program Director or Department Chair, a short application essay, and detailed curriculum vitae. Grant recipients will be given a stipend for accommodation, board, and insurance.  Airfare to Botswana will be covered by the Academy.

Applications will be reviewed and decisions made by the Education and Volunteers Abroad Committee in September. Individuals will be notified by the last week of September about the status of their applications.

International Society Annual Meeting Travel Grants

Through mutual arrangements with several international dermatological societies, a number of travel grants are available for U.S. and Canadian residents, fellows or young dermatologists (within five years of completing residency) to attend the 2009 annual meetings of the societies. This is a wonderful opportunity for the successful applicants to meet foreign colleagues and possibly establish long-lasting professional relationships. Past attendees have uniformly been very appreciative of the chance to go to these meetings. New this year are travel grant to the annual meetings of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists, and the Dermatological Society of Singapore.

Please note that in recent years, several scholarship recipients have cancelled their attendance due to scheduling conflicts. It is very important that prior to applying, all potential scheduling conflicts be resolved. There are many individuals who apply for these scholarships, and when scholarship recipients do not participate, it takes the opportunity away from other applicants.

Criteria for the scholarships:

  1. Applicants may apply for only one scholarship.
  2. Each program may only submit two applicants for the scholarships and only one applicant per international meeting.
  3. Applicants must have completed at least one year of training by the time of the meeting.
  4. Previous recipients of any of these scholarships are not eligible for another scholarship.

Complete the online application. Applicants will need to attach a letter of nomination from their dermatology residency training director to their application.

Applications will then be reviewed and decisions made by the International Affairs Committee. Individuals will be notified in December about the status of their applications.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 30th, 2008

Each scholarship program has different requirements and provisions, as outlined below:

 

Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD). Two scholarships are being offered by SBD to attend its 64th Congress in Belem, Brazil, September, 5-9, 2009. Individuals will be provided with free registration, accommodation and a stipend of US$250. Those attending the meeting must arrange and assume all travel and meal expenses. Applicants should speak and understand written Portuguese or Spanish, because no translation will be available.

British Association of Dermatologists (BAD).Four scholarships are being offered by BAD to attend its 89th Annual Meeting in Glasgow at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (S.E.C.C.), July 7-10, 2009. There will be a trainee pre-conference meeting on July 6 that may be of interest as well. Registration fees will be waived; hotel accommodations will be provided by the BAD. Residents and fellows will be invited to attend the President's Reception and the Annual Dinner at no charge. Those attending the BAD must arrange and assume all travel and incidental expenses. No official provision will be made for spouses; however, if they pay for their own expenses, they are welcome to attend. Children cannot be accommodated.

Chilean Society of Dermatology (SOCHIDERM). Two scholarships are being offered by SOCHIDERM to attend its annual meeting. The exact location within Chile and dates for the meeting are to be decided at the Board of Director's meeting in March of 2009;the meeting is always held during the third week of November. The society will provide ground transportation tothe meeting location, registration fees and lodging at the meeting location. Each attendee will also receive a grant of US$500. Attendees must understand and speak Spanish fairly well. Attendees should arrange their own accommodation for arrival and departure days in Santiago as this will not be covered by the society.

European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV). Three scholarships are being offered by EADV for its 2008 annual meeting in Berlin, Germany, October 7-11, 2009. Each scholarship will include an award of $750, free registration, and housing in a reasonable hotel or at a university campus depending on availability. Unfortunately, EADV cannot provide additional support for travel expenses; therefore, the successful candidates are expected to find their own funding sources beyond the $750 that is included in the scholarship.

French Society of Dermatology (FSD). Two scholarships are being offered by the Foundation for Research in Dermatology along with the FSD to attend their annual meeting in Paris, France (Palais des Congres, Porte Maillot), December 8-12, 2009. Each attendee will receive a grant of €1,500. The attendees will not be charged a registration fee; however, traveling and housing must be taken care of by the attendee. Attendees must be fluent in French.

Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists (IADVL). Two scholarships are being offered by IADVL to attend its 36th National Conference, DERMACON 2009 in Bangalore, January 6-10, 2009 (please note that successful recipients will be informed the third week in October). Each attendee will receive a waiver of conference registration, accommodation and local hospitality.

Irish Association of Dermatologists (IAD). Two scholarships are being offered by IAD to attend its Spring Meeting, April 24-25, 2009 at the Inisowen Gateway Hotel, Cuncrana, Co. Donegal (Clinical Meeting). The scholarship includes free registration and two nights’ accommodation. The scholarship does not include transportation; therefore, attendees will need to pay their own travel expenses to Ireland.

Israel Society of Dermatology & Venereology. Two scholarships are being offered by the Israel Society of Dermatology & Venereology to attendits 2009 annual meeting in Tel-Aviv,May 3-6, 2009. The scholarship includes free registration to attend the scientific and social programs, and a grant of $500 per attendee. Attendees must have a fair knowledge of Hebrew. Note: at the time of travel, there can be no U.S. State Department Travel Warning in place for Israel.

Italian Society of Dermatology (SIDeMaST). Two scholarships are being offered by SIDeMaST to attend its annual meeting in Florence, June 10-13, 2009. Each attendee will receive a grant of €500.00. Housing and registration will be provided by the Society. Attendees must be fluent in Italian.

Scottish Dermatological Society (SDS). One scholarship is being offered by SDS to attend its annual meeting in Lanarkshire, June 13-14, 2008. The attendee will receive a grant of £750 Sterling, and will be expected to stay for approximately one week. Accommodation for the attendee will be preferably with young Scottish dermatological families to facilitate collegiality and establish potentially long-lasting friendships. Usually, the trip includes a tour of some of the other Scottish Dermatology departments (Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen) in the 3-4 days before the annual meeting. The cost of attending the meeting (registration, annual dinner, etc.) will be covered by the Society and will not be included in the £750 Sterling award.

Dermatological Society of Singapore. Two scholarships are being offered by DSS to attend its annual meeting, ASM, in July 2009 (exact dates to be determined). Each attendee will receive a grant of $500. DSS would also be able to arrange for a 1-2 week clinical observation attachment to the various dermatological training centres in Singapore such as the National Skin Centre, Changi General Hospital, and/or the Singapore General Hospital.

International Affairs Committee Registration Scholarships

Academy Annual Meeting Registration Scholarship Program (Nominations solicited annually in May for the following year)

  • Nominations must be submitted by an officer of national dermatologic society.
  • Designed to give young dermatologists from outside the U.S. and Canada an opportunity to attend the Annual Meeting of the Academy
  • Limit of two per country. Open to all countries except for the United States and Canada.
  • Scholarship consists of registration waiver and free admission to a 1-day postgraduate course. No travel funds are included with the scholarship, so awardees must secure funding for travel, housing and incidental expenses.
  • Online Application is due September 1, 2008.

World Congress Fund Review Task Force Scholarships

Academy Annual Meeting Poster Exhibit Scholarship Program (Closed for 2008 - Applications solicited annually in May for the following year)

  • Restricted to individuals in developing countries who are within five years of the completion of their dermatology residency training at the time of the annual meeting.
  • Limit of two per country and must receive endorsement of officer of national dermatologic society.
  • All applicants must submit a poster abstract, and if a grant is awarded, are expected to prepare a poster for the meeting.
  • Scholarship includes registration waiver, free admission to a 1-day course, and a stipend of $1,500.
  • Online application and national society endorsement are due July 1, 2008.

Visiting Residents' Scholarship Program (Applications Reviewed Semi-Annually on June 1 and December 1)

  • Five grants are provided each year for dermatology trainees (residents or research fellows within 2 years of their residency training) from developing countries to spend one month at an accredited dermatology residency program in the United States (or Canada).
  • Each $2,500 grant is used to defer travel and living expenses incurred by the visiting resident.
  • Proposals may be initiated by either the visiting resident or the host program, but ultimately certain criteria and procedures must be fulfilled. The director of the host program is responsible for submitting all forms and supporting documents to the World Congress of Dermatology Fund Review Committee.
  • Only one scholarship is awarded per international training program each year.
    Each US/Canadian program is limited to hosting two awardees per year.
