Resources and Links for Disaster Preparedness

The Academy recognizes that a disaster can have a major effect on a dermatologist both personally and professionally. The Disaster Preparedness Task Force is responsible for identifying ways members can prepare for disaster and determine the appropriate Academy response. The most important component is to be prepared before disaster strikes. The resources and links below are provided to assist dermatologists, their office staff members, and their families so they can be prepared in case of disaster.

Examples of disasters include, but are not limited to:

  • Earthquakes
  • Extreme heat
  • Fires
  • Floods
  • Hazardous material incidents
  • Household chemical emergencies
  • Hurricanes
  • Landslide and debris flows (mudslides)
  • Nuclear power plant emergencies
  • Terrorism (explosions, biological, chemical, nuclear, and radiological)
  • Thunderstorms and lightning
  • Tornados
  • Tsunamis
  • Wildfires
  • Winter storms and extreme cold
  • Volcanos

It is very important that you keep paper copies and electronic copies of your important documents (scanned to flash drive or disk) in case of disruption of Internet service. It also is highly recommended that you keep copies in several separate locations.
