Starting in 2011 through 2016, all primary care physicians (i.e., family physicians, internists, geriatricians, and pediatricians) will be eligible for a 10 percent bonus in Medicare payments.

To qualify, at least 60 percent of the physician's total Medicare charges must consist of office, nursing home, and home care visits. This payment will be distributed on a monthly or quarterly basis. Even if dermatologists meet this threshold, however, they will not qualify for the bonus.

Also, the law increases Medicaid payments to match 100 percent of Medicare rates for primary care office visits in 2013 and 2014 only. These primary care increases are not expected to result in reductions for specialists. No changes were made to Medicaid payments for specialists.
