Federal regulations can have a critical effect on how dermatologists manage their practices and care for patients. The Academy, along with a variety of regulatory agencies, advocates for its members on important issues related to dermatology.

Drug and device regulation: The AADA, in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), advocates about issues affecting patient safety, drug availability, and truth in advertising.

Payment policy: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) oversees federal health care payment policy. The Academy advocates for fair valuation of dermatologic services under Medicare and Medicaid programs. 

Other issues: Other regulatory agencies, such as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH), set policies and agendas that affect the specialty.
