Diversity Medical Student Mentorship: Information for Students

Diversity Mentorship Program

The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) invites first- through fourth-year medical students from ethnically and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds who are interested in learning more about the specialty of dermatology to participate in the Academy's Diversity Mentorship Program. Each applicant will be asked to discuss his or her level of financial need as it relates to the pursuit of a career in medicine.

In 1996, the AAD was one of the first medical specialty societies to create a mentorship program aimed at a diverse medical student population. Oftentimes dermatologists who participate in this program as mentors and the students who shadow them in their offices develop professional relationships that follow the students through their residencies and into key junctures in these medical students' careers.

Program Description and Purpose

The American Academy of Dermatology would like to reach out to first- through fourth-year medical students from ethnically and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds to gain exposure to the specialty of dermatology by providing a firsthand, one-on-one mentorship experience with the dermatologist of the student's choice. Medical students commonly participate in this mentorship program in the summer months. However, there is some flexibility in accommodating the student's schedule. The program must be completed by Dec. 1 of the year that the grant is awarded.

Upon application to the program, medical students may choose a mentor on their own, or they can choose from a list of mentors maintained by the Academy. Medical students who are selected to participate in the Diversity Mentorship Program will each receive a $1,500 grant.
