Diversity Medical Student Mentorship: Information for Mentors
The American Academy of Dermatology invites members to participate as mentors in its Diversity Mentorship Program. The program is open to first-, second-, third-, and fourth-year medical students from ethnically and socioeconomically diverse backgrounds who are interested in learning more about dermatology as a medical specialty by participating in the Academy's annual Diversity Mentorship Program. The one-month mentorship should be completed between June 1 and Dec. 1 of the year in which the award is provided.
Program Description
Mentors are needed to assist the selected medical students with a one-month (mentorships must be completed by Dec. 1) mentorship experience. The Academy hopes to recruit mentors from a variety of practice settings: private practice, research, etc. It is requested that the student-applicants secure a mentor prior to application. The AAD provides a listing of possible mentors to award recipients to assist them in the selection process. Selected participants will receive a $1,500 grant.
Purpose
The program's objective is to provide students with personal and hands-on exposure to dermatology by working with a mentor. The Academy hopes that participation in this program stimulates interest in dermatology as a pursuable and obtainable career choice for diverse students.
How to Volunteer to be a Mentor
Complete the mentor application form and fax it to the AAD Diversity Mentorship Program at (847) 330-1120. Selected students who are interested in your location or setting may be contacting you directly regarding your individual interest and possible scheduling preferences.
