The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is dedicated to promoting the highest quality of dermatologic care through continuing medical education and research. The AAD is proud to announce that through a generous contribution by The Elsevier Foundation and the Skin Disease Education Foundation (SDEF), both of whom share with the AAD a commitment to continuing excellence in dermatology, the AAD has created an educational program called the Program for Innovative Continuing Medical Education in Dermatology (PICMED). The program was established to facilitate the continuing education of dermatologists through support and development of innovative continuing medical education programs.

The endowment fund will be used to support the activities of PICMED, including but not limited to:

  • Creative needs assessment mechanisms.
  • Innovative uses of technology.
  • Unique approaches to specific subject matter(s).
  • Novel presentation techniques
  • Utilization of existing educational paradigms in new environments.

Criteria

The following criteria have been established for PICMED funding consideration:

  • Perceived value of the project to dermatologic education for practitioners; practical and innovative use of continuing medical education.
  • Clarity and completeness of the program description.
  • Willingness to grant the American Academy of Dermatology the right of first refusal to partner with the grant recipient in the development and marketing of any potential products that may result from the research effort.

This request for applications expresses the AAD's current funding intentions. As such, this request for applications does not constitute an offer or create an obligation to fund proposals submitted by any individual, group of individuals, or entity.

Proposals

The length of a proposal is not to exceed five pages, excluding references and supporting material. Each application should include:

  • A written statement of the CME mission, which includes the CME purpose, content areas, target audience, type of activity(s) provided, and expected results of the program.
  • A needs assessment.
  • The program's learning objectives.
  • Planned evaluation methods for the program.
  • Proposed program budget (the budget may not include investigator or personnel
salary(s), travel expenses, meeting fees, publication costs, or significant equipment costs).
  • Identification of other sources of funding for the proposed program.

A completed PICMED application and bibliographic sketch of each applicant (up to two pages) must accompany each proposal.

Selection Process

Proposals will be kept confidential and reviewed by an appointed workgroup of the AAD's Council on Education. The workgroup will then form a recommendation for final approval by the AAD's board of directors. Proposals from individuals with a clear association to dermatologic organizations will be given preference; however, all proposals to develop innovative continuing medical education programs will be considered.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submission of applications for the initial call is Sept. 4, 2009. Successful applicants will be notified of their award by Feb. 15, 2010.
