AAD international educator's grant

One of the international goals of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) is to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases worldwide. This is supported by promoting volunteer efforts to travel and provide education in developing countries and by supporting specific activities such as development of a pharmacy, laminated educational cards and other sustainable programs.

One physician traveling to a developing country to educate local physicians is beneficial; but allowing a dermatologist to attend the Academy’s Annual Meeting or Summer Academy and learn a broad range of skills from the experts in the field is an invaluable experience.

This scholarship will help reinforce what is learned from U.S. volunteers who have traveled to these sites and expand the educator’s knowledge and experience. This will, in turn, improve the educational experience for those being taught by this scholarship winner and will improve the care available to the population that this individual serves.

Up to two scholarships will be granted each year. Grantees will receive a $2,000 stipend to contribute to airfare, meals and incidental expenses. He or she will receive meeting registration and one one-day course at no charge and the Academy will cover hotel expenses for five nights.

Winners attending the Annual Meeting will be invited to attend the International Affairs dinner and reception. They also will present highlights of their programs at the Education and Volunteers Abroad Committee meeting and possibly the Volunteer Forum.

The scholarship will be offered to a dermatologic educator from a developing country. The applicant must be a trained dermatologist or physician (if a dermatologist is not at the site) and may not be a resident.

The individual must be directly associated with a program that the AAD supports (currently Haiti, Mexico or the RDTC in Moshi, Tanzania), by Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO) (currently Cambodia, Costa Rica, Peru, St. Lucia and Uganda), or by an AAD member volunteer.

The individual must have been associated with the AAD or HVO program, or with the AAD member volunteer for at least one year before applying. An individual may not receive the grant more than one time every five years and only one person per country may be selected in any given year.

Scholarship is not being offered in 2012. Please contact Coura Badiane for more information at cbadiane@aad.org.
