Dear colleagues:

2011 was a productive year for the American Academy of Dermatology’s efforts to advance the science and research agenda of dermatology and ensure that we educate the public through evidence-based communications.

On June 14, in an unprecedented partnership, Academy President Ronald L. Moy, MD, and myself were invited to participate in the FDA’s announcement of the new rules for labeling sunscreen. The rules, effective this summer for larger manufacturers, will reduce consumer confusion and help the public to make educated choices about choosing a sunscreen that will protect against sunburn and reduce the risk of skin cancer. Most importantly, the FDA clearly defined “broad spectrum” and how it should be tested.

Refer to the Council on Communications report for additional information about the new FDA sunscreen rules.

The FDA is currently reviewing the recommendation of the General and Plastic Surgery Devices Panel of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health Advisory committee and current literature on harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation from the use of indoor tanning devices. Members of the council drafted a review paper based on the current literature on adverse effects of UV radiation due to the exposure from indoor tanning devices, which was published in JAAD in 2011 to influence the FDA to consider reclassifying the indoor tanning devices from Class I to Class II, and to consider stating that these devices are contraindicated for minors due to the increased risk of developing skin cancer.

In order to better serve dermatologists and their patients, the Council underwent some organizational changes in 2011. A new Research Agenda Committee will serve as a liaison to key leaders within the National Institutes of Health and other funding sources and as a resource for the Congressional Policy Committee. The Committee will play an important role in 2012 as the Academy works to define a research agenda for the specialty that reflects the needs of patients and practitioners.

Please refer to the links above for more information on the undertakings of the Council on Science and Research throughout 2011.

Sincerely,

Henry W. Lim, MD, FAAD
Chair, Council on Science and Research
