Appropriate use criteria
Another exciting advancement in the field of dermatology is the development of Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) for Mohs surgery. The Mohs AUC are an important opportunity to help preserve the option of this surgical technique for patients when clinical evidence and expert clinical judgment suggests the expected clinical benefit is greatest.
An ad hoc task force was formed with representatives from the AAD, American College for Mohs Surgery (ACMS), American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDS), and American Society for Mohs Surgery (ASMS). A large panel of experienced dermatologists and payer representatives are reviewed and commented on the definitions, clinical scenarios, and evidence tables drafted by the task force, which were then rated by a 17-member panel comprised of both Mohs surgeons and non-Mohs dermatologists. The resulting manuscript has been approved by all stakeholder societies; the AUC will be published this spring. More details regarding the AUC is available on the Academy's website.
