Education and Maintenance of Certification

Robert S. Kirsner, MD, PhD

Dear colleagues:

Education and maintenance of certification are key components of the American Academy of Dermatology’s strategic framework. The Academy continued to lead the specialty with this philosophy throughout 2011, keeping members up to date on the latest developments in maintenance of certification and putting together another unparalleled slate of educational meetings.

In addition, the Council on Education held a retreat in March to discuss a number of important issues regarding continuing education and professional development for physicians. The council also discussed how its current structure supported the development, implementation, and measurement of Academy educational offerings. Following the insights gleaned from this productive meeting, we designed a plan to restructure the council’s committees and task forces. As a result, the Council on Education has been renamed the Council on Education and Maintenance of Certification. With this restructure, the council is better positioned to fulfill the Academy’s strategic initiatives related to outcomes-based education and MOC/maintenance of licensure.

We will continue to improve and strive for the best for dermatologists and the specialty throughout 2012. Please click on the tabs above to read in depth about some of our key initiatives throughout 2011. I believe you’ll find the Academy’s dedication to quality professional development as enduring as in years past.

Sincerely,

Robert S. Kirsner, MD, PhD
Chair, Council on Education and Maintenance of Certification
