Continuing education

It continues to be a vital Academy priority to give dermatologists greater understanding and insight into the requirements of the American Board of Dermatology’s Maintenance of Certification program and provide support for members to meet those requirements. More information about all of our offerings in this area is available in the MOC section of the Academy’s website.

In 2011, the Academy produced a melanoma supplement to the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology that was cosponsored with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CME-certified supplement, supported by the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control and guest-edited by two experts from the organization’s Atlanta office, provided high-quality continuing education in an open-access format.

Additionally, Dialogues in Dermatology welcomed a new editor in 2011 — Michael Girardi, MD. Dr. Girardi is an associate professor of dermatology and the residency director of the Department of Dermatology at the Yale School of Medicine. He assumed the role of editor-in-chief on Jan. 1, 2011. His most recent piece in the JAAD covered the highlights from Dialogues published throughout 2011.

Looking forward, the council plans to launch a Patient Safety Module in summer 2012. The content will cover epidemiology of error, systems thinking, human factors and safety enhancing technology, communication, and culture of safety as these topics relate to the practice dermatology.
